Kai Owens ‘26

Kai Owens is a senior at Spelman College whose professional vision is rooted in equity, community, and the belief that education should be a place of belonging and joy. As a student in Spelman’s Teacher Preparation Program, Kai is increasingly confident that her calling is to become a transformative leader in education—one who not only teaches but also helps reimagine what educational excellence looks like for communities that have historically been underserved. Her long-term goals include building strong school-community partnerships, developing culturally responsive curriculum, and pursuing leadership in curriculum development, education policy advocacy, and district-level equity work.

Kai’s academic success is reflected through recognition such as Honor Roll and membership in Kappa Delta Epsilon, an honorary educational fraternity. Her leadership and civic engagement are equally strong. She serves as Vice President of NAACP, Co-President of the Georgia Association for Educators, and as a Southern Education Leadership Initiative Fellow. She has also participated in a retreat with the City Schools of Decatur, gaining preparation for navigating difficult conversations in professional environments—an important skill for educators and leaders working within complex systems.

Professionally, Kai expanded her experience through a paid internship with the Southern Education Foundation in Atlanta, Georgia, serving as an MTSS Fellow. This role aligns directly with her interest in educational systems that support student needs, equity, and long-term outcomes.

Kai’s signature contribution is her leadership as Founder of The Unity Pantry Project, a service initiative dedicated to combating food insecurity in Mississippi and beyond. As Founder, Kai has led the organization through consistent service work across Summer 2024 through Spring 2025, dedicating 50 hours to outreach efforts including service week and support to unhoused and food-insecure communities. Her leadership includes scheduling, fundraising, sourcing information, and recruiting volunteers to assemble and distribute hygiene bags and food kits. Her work is grounded in a justice-centered framework that recognizes how food insecurity intersects with systemic inequities—reflecting a leader who is both thoughtful and action-oriented.

Kai Owens is building a future where education is not simply instruction—it is transformation. Through her academic preparation, leadership roles, internship experience, and community-driven service, she is demonstrating the qualities of an educator-leader who will shape classrooms and systems with courage, compassion, and clarity.
